Canungra

Canungra owes its existence to the timber industry and once boasted one of the largest stands of timber in the colony. By the 1940's most of the timber had been cut and the sawmills were closing, the historic Lahey's Tramway is the only remnants of the past sawmilling activities in the area. Following this logging era, came beef cattle and dairying. Canungra has immortalised in the Australian band Redgum's song "He Was Only 19" depicting the Vietnam War. Canungra Township is more than 125 years old.

The nearby locality of Mt Witheren also knows as 'Nindooinbah' is the location of a large military establishment called the Kokoda Barracks, which includes the Land Warfare Centre. It was established During Word War II and revived in 1954 to train personnel for the South East Asia Treaty Organization { SEATO } commitment in the Malaya and on through to the end of the Vietnam War.

Situated on the Beaudesert-Nerang Road, near the Picturesque Canungra Creek. Canungra is nestled in the middle of 4 major tourist destinations and is the gateway to the Gold Coast Hinterland; Mount Tamborine, Lamington National Park, O'Reilly's and Binna Burra. The township is also a meeting place for many groups such as hangliders, paragliders, birdwatchers and bushwalkers and Motor Bike Club Riders many of which visit the area annually to take advantage of what Canungra has to offer.

Canungra is also the home to a flourishing Wine industry with local wineries such as O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyards, Sarabah Estate Vineyard, Albert River Wines, Mount Nathan Winery and the Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard and Winery. The council owned Moriarty Park is a well utilised sporting ground which is used for junior and senior soccer, rugby league and cricket. The community facilities include a primary school, post office, ambulance, police, rural and auxiliary fire brigades, doctor, chemist, dentist, Veterinary Surgery, service station, garages, hardware store, baker, butcher, hairdressers, video store, real estates, RSL, cafes, swimming pool, lawn bowls and a pony club.

The Odd Gecko

The Odd Gecko was established in 1998. The house was transport to Canungra by truck from South Brisbane for the sole purpose of being a bed & breakfast accommodation. The Gardens have been well known for wedding parties to have their photos taken in and has been well received by all guests that have stayed here. We have hosted many large groups such as paragliders and hangliders, mountain bike groups as well as wedding groups and bushwalkers/birdwatchers. We host some families throughout the year as there is plenty of places to go and things to do within the area.
